The Avid program is a special program where students are taught note-taking and study skills so that they may pursue a more challenging College Preparatory curriculum. Students are enrolled in Honors classes, and Advanced Placement classes as they continue in the program. Students are provided with a support system, whereby each year they take one class of Avid to continue receiving instruction on study skills, as well as individualized tutoring and mentoring.
The program is designed to give a support system to students who may not consider college preparatory path. Students may come from families who have previously not had college graduates.
Students must apply for admission, upon recommendation of their teachers. Student continue in the program if their grades and behavior continue to improve and remain exemplary. Students may be removed from the program if they do not continue to follow the high standards of this program.
Many opportunities are available to Avid students. Many organizations offer specific scholarships to Avid students. The Avid teachers assist students in looking into colleges and successfully completing the college application process. Students also receive assistance and instruction on taking the ACT or SAT and other tests needed for the college application process.
At Maplewood we're proud of our Avid program, and our excellent teachers have been trained to provide support for all teachers who have Avid students in the classrooms. Avid helps students to reach for the stars, and gives them tools to be a success in achieving their potential.
