English Learner

The EL (English Learners) program provides English language instruction for students who are not native English speakers. Maplewood students come from many places, including  Asia, Central America, and Africa.  Spanish-speakers are the largest language among the Non-English Language Background students.  There are at least eight different languages spoken at home by our diverse Maplewood students.  All instruction is given in English, in accordance with state policy.

District Philosophy: The Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools recognizes the importance of providing a quality educational program for all students, regardless of English proficiency or cultural background. We strive to ensure that our Limited English Proficient students attain English proficiency in all areas of language, develop high levels of academic achievement, and meet the same academic achievement standards as all children are expected to meet. By providing meaningful language learning in a student-centered, accepting environment, our Limited English Proficient students are empowered with the tools necessary to become a vital part of our culturally diverse community.

Classes provided here are English Language Development I or II and ELD Reading I to IV.  The teacher is Mrs. Melissa Burka. (Email)Email

The English Language Development Assessment (ELDA) is given each February and March.  It tests the four domains of Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening, and it helps determine which students are proficient enough to exit the program.
