Core Graduation Requirements
For Students entering the 9th grade 2009-2010 or After

CORE Minimum Graduation Requirements

English 4 (includes English I, II, III, IV)

Mathematics 4 (1 must be taken each year and must include Algebra I, Geometry & Algebra II)

Science 3 (includes Biology, Chemistry or Physics and 1 additional lab science)

Social Studies 3 ½ (includes U.S. History, ½ Economics, ½ Government, ½ Personal Finance, 
                                    and either World Geography, World History, AP Human Geography, 
                                    AP European History or Ancient/Modern History)

Physical Education 1

Wellness 1

Fine Art 1

Foreign Language 2 (must be in the same foreign language)

Elective/Career Focus 3 (see your professional school counselor for qualifying classes/student 
                                             career pathway)

Electives number will vary depending on number of credits needed for graduation


Graduating with Honors

In order to graduate with a Regular Diploma with Honors, students must satisfy all requirements for a regular diploma and score at or above all of the following ACT subject area readiness benchmarks (or equivalent SAT scores):

English 18

Math 22

Science 24

Social Studies 21


Graduating with Distinction

In order to graduate with a Regular Diploma with Distinction, students must satisfy all requirements for a regular diploma, earn a B average (85 or higher), and complete one of the following:

Earn a nationally recognized industry certification

Participate in at least one of the Governor’s Schools

Be selected as a National Merit Finalist or Semi-Finalist

Attain a composite score of 31 or higher on the ACT

Attain a score of 3 or higher on at least 2 Advanced Placement exams

Earn 12 or more semester hours of transcripted postsecondary credit

*the Valedictorian and Salutatorian grade point average calculation/determination will occur at the end of seven semesters (typically December of senior year).

Math 3 credits
Science 3 credits
World History or World Geography 1 credit
U.S. History 1 credit
Economics ½ credit
Government ½ credit
PE/ROTC/Band 1 credit
Wellness 1 credit

!! Students must pass the Gateway exams in Algebra I, Biology and English II!!
Students will be placed in a Gateway Intervention class if they pass the class, but fail the Gateway exam.
Students must have a total of 28 credits to graduate (if they start 9th grade at a block school).


(Students must choose an academic path.)

Scholars/Honors Path

All core requirements.

Complete 8 credits of honor, Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB).

Two of the 8 must be AP or IB. One of the IB/AP credits must be in the junior or senior year.

Two honors, AP, or IB credits must be in the junior year and two in the senior year.

Math must include Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II.

In addition:

1 Fine Art credit

2 credits in the same foreign language. Grade Point Average (GPA) must be 85 or higher by December of the senior year.


University Path

All core requirements.

Math must include Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II.

In addition:

1 Fine Art credit

2 credits in the same foreign language.

Technical Path

All core requirements.

Math must include Algebra I and Geometry.

In addition:

3 credits in the same technical field. Maplewood offers pathways in: Interactive Multimedia, Automotive Technology, Construction (Electrical), Cosmetology, Culinary Arts, Family Community Services, Business Management, and Health Science.

For Dual Path: Students must have all core requirements plus the additional credits required for BOTH the University and Technical Paths.

In the chart below, record the number of maximum possible credits for each of the four years of high school. If the student is a freshman, assume he will stay at that school and therefore record the maximum number of credits available at the current school for four years. If the student transfers to another school, the maximum number will be adjusted.
